Cafe Fayre
West St. Horsham, West Sussex

September 2002

Situated in the town centre. All the staff appeared to be young (Saturday) girls, there was no evidence of a manager anywhere. We visited during a Saturday lunchtime which we thought would be a busy time, and yet there were very few customers. We were attracted by the sign pointing to an outside terrace but when we reached it all 3 of the tables were taken so we chose a table near the door. There was evidence of the previous occupants meal still on the table mats and the table itself, in the form of bits of lettuce and crumbs. These were still there when we left as no attempt was made to wipe the table. The salt and pepper pots were covered in grease, grime and hair. We ordered tea, coffee, juice, a pastry and a salad. The tea cup was dirty. The inside of the milk jug was filthy.

The salad was a reasonable size although several of the items stated on the menu were missing. The cucumber had been sliced some time previously as it was dry and curled up, there was no choice of dressing, it arrived covered in a rather nasty mustard dressing.

A person at the next table complained to the waitress about finding a fly in his food.

As we left we noticed how dirty the floor was and by the door there was a dirty counter with the remains of a dried up chicken. If we had noticed this before we would not have gone in. We had realised why a pleasant looking cafe in a busy street was almost empty at lunchtime.

The coffee and pastry were OK but we would not return here under any circumstances.
