Jacksons Restaurant Guide 2001 - 2003 South Lodge Hotel
A 4 star country hotel set in extensive grounds. The staff are mostly friendly and helpful. The restaurant has 3 AA rosettes which led us to believe it would be good. We tried room service for our first evening, as it was late, only sandwiches were available. There were no vegetarian options for these. They arrived with some slimy mixed salad leaves which were inedible and obviously not fresh. The fillings were OK but the white bread was the heavy duty processed sliced (cotton wool)variety and not the thickly sliced crusty bread mentioned on the menu. We ordered tea and coffee which arrived with no milk or sugar. We completed the breakfast order and hung it on the door, optimistically expecting a good start to the morning. Sadly, this was not to be. It was not quite the worst hotel breakfast we have ever had but it was below average. It was hot and well presented. The porridge was OK. Black pudding failed to arrive. The rest was greasy, scrambled eggs were heavy and bacon dried up. The toast was not toasted, simply slightly dried up on one side and arrived without butter. The salt cellar was not only empty but didn't even have a stopper. The pot of tea was cold and undrinkable and the coffee was weak throughout our stay. We were looking forward to a meal in the restaurant but reconsidered and decided to look for something outside of the hotel. The next morning we decided to try breakfast in the dining room. There was a noticeable improvement although there was no cream for the porridge, the cooked breakfast was much better although there was a wait as it was cooked to order.
